The Enterprise Police Department has been investigating numerous incidents involving the theft of property from automobiles since the early part of April. Most of the thefts occurred in the Cotton Creek area and several occurred at apartment complexes near Freedom Drive and residential areas off of Plaza Drive and George Wallace Drive. The investigation into these cases is being conducted by Lt Lennis Darby and Officer Michael Darbro. As many as 30 suspects are believed to be involved in the thefts. Approximately $8,000 worth of property has been recovered and most has been returned to the owners. However, several items recovered have not been associated with a theft and during the investigation police have determined that many cases were not reported to the police. If anyone has had property stolen from their vehicle during the past three months and has not filed a report, the police department is requesting that you file a report as soon as possible. The police department is also asking parents to question their children if they have recently come into possession of items such as cell phones, digital cameras, GPS systems or lap top computers. Police are still looking for flight gear including a flight helmet that was stolen from a vehicle. Anyone with information concerning this equipment is asked to contact the police department. Information obtained from some of the suspects is that they walk through neighborhoods checking cars to see if the doors are locked. If not, they open the car and take anything of value. They referred to this as “car hopping”. The police department would like to remind citizens to lock their vehicles to prevent these crimes of opportunity.
Police anticipate making numerous arrests in the coming weeks.
Anyone with information concerning these cases or if you have any information concerning the location of any of the stolen property, you are asked to contact the Enterprise Police Department at 347-2222.
